If you want to travel with your dog, it’s going to take a bit of preparation to do it right. Most dogs love a good car ride, but they won’t handle long distance road trips as well if you don’t create a space for them to lay and relax. Dog beds from Canada will do the trick, but you can also make your own as well. Sometimes, all it takes is a foam sheet and a durable cover. Aside from sleep, we’ll show you how to handle everything your little pup might need.
To Crate or Not to Crate
Most people feel bad about putting their pets into a crate, but they actually like it in some cases. Crates make them feel safer on long distance trips, but you need to take some precautions first. Make sure the dog has played outside for a bit before going into the crate, including at rest stops. Maintain a positive disposition and leave the dog alone for a few minutes to acclimate to the crate. Return after a few minutes and give the dog a treat and a reassuring tone. If you want to make things extra comfortable, order high density foam sheets and cover them with an old blanket. Your puppy can claw them up without concern, and they will make for a wonderful bed.
While Driving
It’s best if you keep your focus on the road. That means no feeding your dog, definitely don’t let him in the front seat and make sure your pup is secured so he doesn’t go flying if you stop quickly. If you feel like your dog needs attention, pull over and attend to him on the safety of the roadside or at a truck stop.
Calming Your Dog
After a long enough time has passed, it’s likely your dog will start to get some travel anxiety. It happens to the best of us. In these moments, pull over and spend some time with your dog. Give him some attention, a snack and let him get outside and walk around a bit. It’s a good idea to map out rest spots, so you always have an option to relax if your dog requires that. It may also be a good idea to keep a spare pet bed with you for longer breaks. Custom cushions are very affordable, and they offer an opportunity for your dog to relax. Especially if you bring his favorite blanket.
